Subnautica 2 Revealed, Four-Player Co-Op Finally Arrives
One of the most requested features throughout the lives of both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero has been co-op. In 2025, deep-sea explorers are going to get their wish as developer Unknown Worlds has not only revealed Subnautica 2 as part of the Xbox Partner Preview Showcase, but that it will ship into Early Access and Game Preview, and then finally retail, with up to four-player co-op. But before we get to any of the lite-on specifics revealed, check out the game's cinematic teaser:
Now published by Krafton (meaning more fundage for Unknown Worlds), Subnautica 2 is set to take players to an all-new world beyond the original splashing ground of Planet 4546B, allowing for new discoveries, new challenges, new crafting recipes and, most importantly, new dangers.
A new world awaits alongside an all-new story. You are a pioneer travelling to a distant world, but something is amiss. The ship's AI insists you carry on the mission. This world is too dangerous for humans to survive… Unless you change what it means to be human.
What creatures, intelligent or otherwise, await your arrival? Explore with Friends Play alone or with up to three friends in online multiplayer co-op. Whether exploring mysterious ruins, building custom bases, or adventuring deeper into the world… The challenge of this planet will test your ingenuity and ability to adapt, in unexpected and curious ways.
The curious line from the game's descriptor over on Xbox Wire (and above) is "Unless you change what it is to be human". If this means Unknown Worlds might look to let players augment their player character it could open up an entirely new progression pathway to allow for various risk-reward upgrades for different types of exploration or even combat (though the series has always been less about combat and more about Survival and Discovery).
You can Wishlist the game nmow and ready for Steam Early Access next year, and as stated earlier, it will also find its way to Game Preview for Xbox, though the studio is quick to point out as with both of the first Subnautica games, these early access portals will present a true work in progress with new assets, biomes, gameplay features and story added over a period of time as the studio gathers feedback and stress tests. It's worked in the past for them, so no need to change that up now.
