Sometimes an Enticing Descriptor is all You Need to Fall in Love - Sick Samurai Revealed
When you get a press blast in our world, sometimes all it takes to get your attention is a simple ‘stinger’. In today’s instance for the freshly-revealed Sick Samurai from indie developer-publisher, Solideo, it was this blindingly awesome descriptor:
“Sick Samurai, a Hotline Miami-like with Samurai Champloo aesthetics”
And that’s all this small team needed to say to grab our attention. Never mind that it’s at least a year out from release with an October 2025 window, or that there was no demo or pre-EA access code (often proffered in these types of exchanges), it just looks so damn cool. Here’s the reveal trailer for you to gawk at:
The game features hand-crafted levels, each of which offers multiple paths and strategies, along with various upgrade and item choices that players will make as they progress. Players can restart levels instantly upon death, and repetition is necessary for mastering the game’s combat, which largely revolves around a blazing fast dash-and-slash attack mechanic. Precision, speed, reflexes, and planning will all be put to the test.
Sick Samurai takes place on the fictional island of Furikyu, which features a unique culture that blends Edo period Japan with various 20th century urban American cultures.
Players will be in control of a young man who dreams of becoming the greatest fighter on the island. He seeks out Genyu, an infamous ex-samurai, in the hopes of learning from him. Genyu agrees to take him under his wing, and the two set out on a journey to challenge the four powerful samurai who run the island.
The game will also feature fully voiced dialogue with branching choices that will shape the player’s relationships with the game’s characters.
There’s zero denying the absolute love affair Solideo has with Shinichirō Watanabe, his team and their incredible anime creations by way of Cowboy Bebop and the aforementioned Samurai Champloo which is why it was also no surprise that the release also mentioned Sick Samurai would be accompanied by “an original lofi hip-hop and jazz soundtrack”.
