Rootbound is Everything we Love about the World of Indie Game Development
With a backpack that looks part Mimic part Korok hiker, this potential Indie gem is a "physics-based action-adventure about a plantling's quest to save its home from a mysterious blight". But as with any Indie, the proof is wholly in what we're in store for, and Rootbound's trailer definitely gives us all the excitement goosebumps we want from this type of effort.
Have a look below and try not to fall in love.
The physics stuff here is what gives us life, as well as the idea that everything in the world is a useful item or tool. The query will remain about how open-ended that is, and also how engaging said openness is. It's one thing to offer up a huge amount of agency to the player and quite another if it winds up just being easy and rudimentary.
Our press kit (screens below in our carousel) has no other information or a fact sheet, but upon viewing the trailer it's not difficult to ascertain this is very much a love-letter to The Legend of Zelda in any one of its myriad forms, with stunning pixel art and a pacing at odds with today's fast-paced lickitysplit world of three-second engagement or bust. And we absolutely love that.
You can Wishlist the game now and while we don't know much more than you at this point, we do know the game is due to launch in 2026 and it's highly likely it'll wind up on its spiritual home(s) of Switch or Switch 2 as well as, hopefully, everything else.
Stay tuned for more as we've reached out to the studio.
