Lend a Tentacle, Would Ya - Railgods of Hysterra is Lovecraftian at its Weirdest

And by weirdest, we mean best...

When we look at so-called "Lovecraftian" game design, we tend to find a handful of carryover elements, game to game.

  • Tentacles - check.
  • Fish people - check.
  • Old gods - check.
  • Cultists - check.
  • Cosmic... things - check.

But rarely (or ever) has there been a train as part of that checklist. A perpetually moving one at that, Snowpiercer-like. Yet here we are, staring down the tracks of Railgods of Hysterra - A Lovecraftian "locomotive cooperative base-building survival game". And yes, that's the sort of descriptor designed to send a roving and basic person mad, like so many mountains might.

Look, here, have a look:

It's difficult to truly ascertain at this juncture (junction?) how this thing will play, but given being "Lovecraftian" is so common, we'll take the uniquer spin on things over just ticking off the list above to have the name attached.

Roam the cosmic wasteland scavenging for supplies to craft tools, weapons, and upgrade the mobile base. Enhance abilities to unlock unique perks and clever character builds. Explore procedurally-generated hellscapes with spells and firearms while battling otherworldly creatures and cultists either alone or with up to four friends through online co-op.

We mean, this concept is nothing if not unique. Obviously we need to know what the endgame looks like, how it differs from Solo to Co-op, and just what the gameplay loop is, but we've nabbed tickets and will be waiting at the next station to board, if only to be ticket checked by a floor tentacle, because... reasons.

Railgods of Hysterra is listed as 2025 for release and will land on PC and PS5 at this stage.Check out our screenshot gallery via the carousel below and Wishlist here.
