Sci-Fi Epic, Megalopolis, from Francis Ford Coppola Finally Lands Distribution Deal
Recently shown at the Cannes Film Festival, Megalopolis, from visionary and veteran film-maker, Francis Ford Coppola, received a standing ovation amidst mixed reviews with Variety's Peter Debruge remarking that the film was a:
"Ginormous, recklessly ambitious epic in which humanity’s eternal themes — greed, corruption, loyalty and power — threaten to suffocate a more intimate personal crisis. In this case, a conservative politician and a forward-thinking urban designer clash over a mythic city’s future, with unwieldy results..."
A dystopian "Fable" as the title suggests, the movie was funded with USD $120 million of Coppola's own money and seemingly crams years and years of the writer-director's thoughts, philosophies and story ideas into a two-hour-plus visual behemoth. Many cite its grandiosity as a reflection of Coppola's relationship with art, but also suggest that doesn't make it any good.

Despite a divisive response, Lionsgate, has come on board meaning the film will see a theatrical release, at least in the US so far, and will also make it to IMAX which is the director's preferred format for punters. In a statement, Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson said:
“Francis is a legend. For many of us, his gifts to cinema were one of the inspirations to devote our own careers to film. It is a true privilege to work with him, and to bring this incredible, audacious, and utterly unique movie to theatrical audiences. At Lionsgate, we strive to be a home for bold and daring artists, and ‘Megalopolis’ proves there is no one more bold or daring than the maestro, Francis Ford Coppola."
Stay tuned as we learn whether or not Megalopolis will make its way to Aussie cinemas.
