New Alien: Romulus Trailer Harkens Back to Ridley Scott's Original

A New Entry in the Alien Franchise Looks to Homage the Nostromo with a Hint of LV-426, but will it add its own spin on things meaningfully?

A recently released trailer for Fede Alvarez's take on the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, looks surprisingly a lot like the original which has us scratching our heads over what exactly will we see here that's 'new'. And while that sounds a bit pessimistic, let's not forget that Ridley Scott is still involved in the project and most things he's touched since Gladiator have been, shall we say... pretty bad (though Body of Lies with Leo and Rusty was actually kind of good).

Check it out for yourself:

The film depicts a group of young (read: naive and inexperienced) colonisers who board a derelict space craft to scavenge only to come face to hugger with a... facehugger. We think you can probably guess the rest.

Interestingly, though, the film is set between the arcs of the first movie and James Cameron's masterpiece and will likely feature some elements tying those two films more closely together, so there's scope for it to be more than just a 'celebration' of the first film. We're not suggesting we're entirely sceptical, it is after all an Alien flick and Alvarez's other works in The Evil Dead and Don't Breathe are nothing to scoff at, so we'll tread cautiously for now, as if a Xenomorph were in the room. But we're definitely not ready to 'nuke the planet'. It isn't always the "only way to be sure", after all.

Alien: Romulus is set to release in theatres this August 15.
