Everybody was Gun Fu Fighting - SPINE Teaser Trailer is all Kinds of Action Class

Slick-looking, but have the actors been given 'range' in this "cinematic experience"?

It's easy enough to be inspired by John Wick and other gun fu joints, and an entire nother to challege said inspo in interactive form, with a unique spin and something never really done before, but that's what SPINE from Nekki is attempting to do, and if its latest teaser is anything to go by, it's well on its merry way.

No mussin', have a gawk:

Set in a cyberpunk world and featuring "dynamic camerawork", SPINE is hoping to capture the free-flow cinematic nature of the Wick and co flicks, but in interactive form, which is already giving us pause. On-rails gaming is fun... for a minute, so how much player-agency is thrown into this mix, and against the contextual setup of each sequence, and then whether that all winds up being seamless, rewarding and, you know, feeling like a videogame, will remain to be seen, but for now this looks aesthetically cool AF and is deep on our radar.

More from the Ironlak nib:

SPINE is a single-player, story-rich action game where the player takes on the role of rebellious street artist Redline, accompanied by her sentient combat implant, Spine. Players join them as they challenge the autocratic AI regime of Tensor Corporation while learning to trust each other.

SPINE features camerawork and combat cinematography by action movie stunt specialists and is powered by Unreal Engine 5 and Nekki's original animation engine, Cascadeur, making players the star of their own action movie where no two fights are the same.

While we've known of SPINE for a while, this is obviously the latest information drop and if it delivers on all of those promises and gives us more than something in a straight line, we could have a special quantity on our hands. But more pause comes in the form of its key features being:

  • Movie-Like Experience
  • Innovatve Combat
  • Unrivaled Atmosphere
  • Gripping Narrative

But all of the above does not point to anything resembling 'open'. We should caveat all of our concerns, however, with the many, many 2.5D action games and beat 'em ups that manage to feel less on-railsy, so if we're going down any relatively directed path, hopefully it's along those lines.
