Nintendo Switch 2 Revealed in (Almost) Full

More questions than answers follow, but at least it's all official now...

In perhaps the most delayed of fashion in the wake of more than a handful of leaks, Nintendo has finally lifted the lid on its direct successor to the Switch by way of the aptly titled Nintendo Switch 2

The sleek new hybrid console is roughly 15% larger than the original sporting what could be construed as a more 'grown up' (or 'mature') aesthetic, bringing it more closely in line with the likes of Steam Deck and other similar handheld hybrids. And while we've only been handed a classically Nintendo-sized trailer (read: no 4K, only 1080p) and no static assets just yet, this is still an exciting reveal and honestly, one we can't wait to learn more about and, of course, play with.

If you've missed it thus far, have a squiz below:

There are a number of key takeaways from the above outside of the unit's size. A new Mario Kart experience will definitely accompany its release at least this year we can assume, and one that looks to support up to 24 players if we count the starting grid kart positions, and equally one that looks to be much bigger than previous outings. Of course, this could be additional content for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which is already a very robust experience, or something entirely new and from the ground up for the new hardware.

We'll obviously learn more about the software and capability side of things at the scheduled Nintendo Direct highlighted in the video, which will be on April 2nd for Aussies (a hump day, no less) but the other main thing was that the machine will be *mostly* backwards compatible with the original Switch's physical and digital library with likely the games not compatible being either peripheral-specific to older hardware, or simply unable to be run on the new rig for technical reasons. We have a suspicion the list won't be huge, though.

Finally, public hands-on sessions will be made available globally, with Melbourne playing host for Aussies across May 10 and 11 (learn more here), which is also a telling date that suggests we won't see the console at retail at least before then (our guess is June for release based on... nothing really, just a want). However, this event won't be a free-for-all, but rather based on a random ticketing draw you can learn more about from the link above.

We'll have more as Ninty slowly rolls out info, while we also suspect other parties will now begin to come forward with more insider information, so continue to stay tuned as we'll be ramping up around this significant new release as 2025 gets fully under way.
