Star Wars Genesis Turns Starfield into a Knights of the Old Republic-Style RPG
Bethesda’s Starfield, the company’s first expansive RPG based on a new IP, was met with a mixed response after its debut in 2023. The long-awaited next game from the studio behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4 saw it tackle a grounded sci-fi world where space travel, visiting multiple planets, and dealing with warring factions and an ancient mystery, was the norm.
A lot of the criticism surrounding the game was based on the somewhat bland nature of exploring the “1000 planets” in the game, alongside the limitations of the company’s aging Creation engine. However, as seen with many titles from Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield is fully moddable, which has led to some pretty impressive creations from fans and the broader gaming community.
Star Wars Genesis is a prime example, as it collects hundreds of Star Wars mods for the game and stitches them together with new content, questlines, and RPG elements that draw inspiration from classic titles like BioWare’s Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Sony’s Star Wars Galaxies MMO from back in the day.
Star Wars Genesis has been updated steadily over the past 18 months, and it’s still very much in development, but what’s here so far is really impressive. Set during the height of the Rebels versus Imperial war, you can visit iconic locations like Tatooine’s Mos Eisley, the Imperial home world (and planet-sized city) Coruscant, the Clone Wars hotbed of action that was Geonosis, and more.
By drawing on hundreds of mods (which the creators have obtained permission to use), Star Wars Genesis already feels like a complete experience as it features countless weapons and armour from Star Wars, and vehicles, too. There’s the Millennium Falcon, or Corellian YT-1300 light freighter, X-Wings, TIE Fighters, and more. The character creator even includes the option to play as a Rodian (aka “a Greedo”) or a Gungan (aka “a Jar-Jar Binks”).
Star Wars Genesis is a massive project, with the full mod taking up 300GB of storage or 400GB if you opt for the HD overhaul. There are detailed instructions on how to install it over at the official site, which uses the Wabbajack automated modlist installer - something Skyrim modders are intimately familiar with.
