id Software's classic Heretic + Hexen are back, remastered and with two brand-new episodes
Published by id Software and developed by Raven Software, Heretic is a 1994 shooter built using id’s Doom engine that took the genre-defining FPS action of shooting demons in hell to a traditional fantasy world with spells, wizards, and staffs with giant crystals that dispense elemental damage. Doom with magic was a pretty damn tasty elevator pitch, and the game received a sequel in 1995 called Hexen: Beyond Heretic.
With QuakeCon 2025 kicking off this week, Bethesda, id Software, and the remaster specialists at Nightdive Studios have announced (and released) the Heretic + Hexen definitive collection for… take a deep breath: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Game Pass, and GeForce NOW.
This re-release not only includes all content from these two games, remastered to support a native 4K 120 FPS presentation on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but there’s also support for cross-platform online co-op and multiplayer Deathmatch for up to 16 players. Not only that, but this release includes two brand-new episodes (Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur), mod support, and more.
And yes, for those old-school console gamers, there’s also support for four-player split-screen multiplayer on all platforms - including PC. Like the recent Doom + Doom II re-release, you also have the option to play these classics with an enhanced and remastered soundtrack by composer Andrew Hulshult (DOOM: The Dark Ages). And finally, to celebrate the history and legacy of Heretic and Hexen, this release also includes a ‘Raven Vault’ section with behind-the-scenes material that includes rare artwork and design documents.
There’s a lot more to this release - so for the full skinny, head to the announcement and FAQ page here. We could list everything included in the package, but we’d much rather shoot magic from a giant blue crystal at pixelated monsters.
